How to Disagree

How Should Christians Disagree (Part 2)

Welcome

Thanks for tuning into Redeemer Al Ain’s online service. Our church is currently meeting in person with restrictions on Thursdays from 6:30–7:30pm at the Al Ain Evangelical Church Centre. (For more information about the restrictions click here). As pastors, we also understand that different people have different circumstances and comfort levels for in-person gatherings. We do not want to pressure anyone to attend who would not feel comfortable. We will continue to post the service online so that people can participate digitally.

In this service Pastor John Norris is preaching the second of two topical sermons on the question, "How should Christians disagree?” We’d love to connect with you if you have any questions. Email us at info@redeemeralain.com or fill out a connect form by clicking the link below.

O Church Arise – Keith & Kristin Getty

Lord I Need You – Matt Maher

Bible Reading

1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written,

“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”

12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Study Questions

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 4:1–5 and 1 Corinthians 5:12. In one, Paul says not to judge, in the other he tells us that we must judge. What is the difference

  2. Read Romans 14:1–12. In a disagreement, how can we be convinced our position is correct (verse 5), and not judge the person who disagrees with us?

  3. Read Romans 14:14. What does this verse mean?

  4. Read Romans 15:1–7. How does the way we handle disagreements in the church relate to what Jesus has done for us?

Gracious Redeemer – Austin Stone

Bible Reading

1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:1–6

Study Questions

  1. Read Ephesians 4:1–6 and Colossians 3:12–15. What attitudes should Christians have toward one another?

  2. Why can it be difficult to treat each other like Ephesian 4 and Colossians 3 command? How can we handle those difficulties?

  3. Read Titus 3:1–7. How do verses 1 and 2 relate to verses 3 through 7?

  4. Read 1 Peter 3:8–9. How do these verses encourage our unity and blessing of others?
